Sun and heat

The UV here is fierce, even on cloudy days. Wear SPF 50+, a hat and sunnies, and drink more water than feels normal — especially doing farm work.

Beaches

  • Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches.
  • Learn to spot a rip: a calm-looking gap in the waves. If you’re caught, float, stay calm and raise an arm.
  • In the tropics, respect stinger season and crocodile warning signs.

Wildlife

Most snakes and spiders want nothing to do with you. Wear boots in long grass, don’t touch wildlife, and learn basic first aid for bites. In an emergency, call 000.

Scams to watch for

  • Rooms or cars advertised far below market price, with a “landlord” or seller who can’t meet you.
  • Jobs that ask you to pay a fee, buy equipment upfront, or work without payslips.
  • Anyone promising to guarantee your second-year visa for a price.
