Where you can sleep
Australia has thousands of free and cheap campsites, plus paid caravan parks when you want a hot shower. Sleeping in your van on city streets is often banned and fined — look for signed rest areas and campgrounds instead.
Popular apps like WikiCamps show campsites, dump points, water and reviews from other travellers.
What it costs
- Fuel — your biggest cost. Distances are huge, and fuel is pricier in remote areas.
- Campsites — free to around $40+ a night for powered sites in caravan parks.
- National park camping and entry fees in some states.
- Insurance, rego and repairs if you own the van.
Hire or buy?
Hiring is simpler for trips under two months. Buying usually works out cheaper for longer stays if you can sell it again at the end.
